One task. One next step.

An RMV record update does not always mean a new card is on its way.

Changing a record and receiving a new document are separate checkpoints. Start with what you need, confirm the current official instructions, and keep your confirmation privately.

For vital records, passports, Social Security names/cards, and voter registration, use the U.S. identity and civic-paperwork guide (opens in a new tab), also available as an interactive task chapter (opens in a new tab).

Sources checked: 2026-09-27. Human review: pending. Review due: 2026-10-27, or sooner when a fee, form, channel, eligibility rule, or source conflict changes. These passenger-license, Mass ID, and personal-vehicle routes are informational. RMV and the responsible agencies decide your transaction. Commercial/business, Liquor ID, foreign-license, and disputed legal cases need their own official route.

Privacy: Do not enter or publish your address, license number, SSN, medical details, account identifiers, or submitted forms here. Optional progress marks are reminders only, stay in page memory, and reset on reload. Opening a form or selecting Done does not establish agency completion or permission to drive. Save a printed copy privately if useful.

Start with intent

What are you trying to do?Next reachable step
I moved; my old address is still printedCheck the RMV record, then order a license duplicate or Mass ID duplicate only if wanted.
I lost a card; it was stolen or damagedReplace a license or replace a Mass ID.
I need to renewLicense, Mass ID, or registration: different transactions.
I need REAL ID, a name change, or donor changesChoose REAL ID, change name, or change donor status.
My registration, title, or plates need attentionUpdate registration, replace registration/decal, correct title, replace title, or replace plates.
I moved into or out of MassachusettsTransfer license, transfer vehicle registration, or coordinate cancellation.
I bought, sold, or transferred a vehicleIdentify the ownership transaction.
I need disability parking or reinstatementDisability placard/plate or suspension/reinstatement orientation.
I am learning to driveLearner permit, then road test.
What else changes after moving?Insurance, excise tax, and the multi-agency checklist.

I moved checklist

Use one row per system. Keep a private note of not started / waiting / blocked / done, the confirmation location, and your next follow-up date. A blank or checked box is your reminder, not the agency's decision.

SystemCheck and confirm separately
RMV license or state IDCheck residential and mailing records; decide separately whether to order a card.
Vehicle registration and titleUpdate registration; use title correction only when needed.
Auto insuranceConfirm the policy and garaging address with the insurer.
Excise tax and former municipalityAsk the assessor about the actual bill; an in-state move does not automatically create abatement.
Voter registrationCheck status with the local election office (opens in a new tab). The RMV address page (opens in a new tab) describes an address-change choice, while the automatic-registration page (opens in a new tab) says the licensing-application opt-out was removed and directs opt-out requests to the municipality. Ask which process applies; do not assume an RMV opt-out screen or voter eligibility.
Mail forwardingUse USPS forwarding (opens in a new tab); also notify each sender directly.
UtilitiesArrange start/stop dates with the provider; see housing and utility routes (opens in a new tab).
Employer and payrollUpdate the employer's HR/payroll system and confirm where tax forms will go.
Banks and credit cardsUpdate each institution through a trusted account channel; see money and account guidance (opens in a new tab).
Other insuranceNotify each policy provider and confirm coverage-area or effective-date consequences.
HealthcareUpdate providers, pharmacy, and health plan separately; use care-navigation guidance (opens in a new tab).
Federal and state taxFollow the IRS address-change route (opens in a new tab) and the Massachusetts DOR contact/account route (opens in a new tab). USPS forwarding is not a substitute for direct tax follow-through.
BenefitsNotify the appropriate program through Massachusetts benefits routes (opens in a new tab); check your notices for program-specific reporting duties.
Subscriptions and deliveriesUpdate both billing and delivery addresses; review pending orders and recurring deliveries.

Use the cards

First check → choose the correct transaction → prepare evidence → confirm fee and timing → submit through the agency → save confirmation → wait or follow up → verify the actual result. In the cards, a prerequisite means check whether it is needed, not repeat a completed transaction. Follow-ups are conditional on your situation.

The official page beside each operational rule is the authority for that task. The RMV contact directory (opens in a new tab) includes telephone, accessibility, appointment, and processing-delay routes. Use your notice or agency contact for a case-specific question.
